How to Look for a Job During COVID-19
"Close scrutiny will show that most 'crisis situations' are opportunities to either advance, or stay where you are." Maxwell Maltz
COVID-19 has taken our world upside down. Deaths. Despair. Unemployment. Despite this crisis, there is still an opportunity to find a job that suits your career goals and lifestyle.
As a professional executive, whether you are in the Saas marketing industry, or other mid-level sector, you can implement these 5 important tips when you look for a job during COVID-19.
1. Get clear about your next step.
Take the time to get very clear about your next professional career move. Start with the end in mind and then work backwards to plan what needs to be in place to achieve that milestone. What do you want to be doing in 5 years? What do you want to be doing in 10 years? How do you want your career to support your lifestyle? Who do you want to be working with? The more specific that you can get on the result, the easier it will be to put the plan in place.
2. Get specific on who you want to work with.
I mention this initially in the first tip and again the more specific you can get, the better. What industry do you want to work in? What company do you want to work with? What is their mission, and what are their values? What is the ideal company culture you want to experience?
3. Put a contact list together.
Make a list of people to contact at the companies you would like to work for, with information such as industry type, social profiles, key personnel, preferred method of contact, and content that gives relevant and interesting information about the industry and company. By investing time in preparation and research, you will equip yourself in making the best decisions to support your goals in your next job search and make yourself a stellar standout amongst the sea of potential candidates.
4. Make the decision in your mind to make a pivot professionally.
Oprah Winfrey said “Nothing happens until you decide. Make a decision and watch your life move forward.” Once you make that decision to make that pivot professionally, the process of things aligning to support your goal will start coming into play. The proper mindset is critical in moving you forward.
5. Be fearless and reach out.
The uncertainties of COVID-19 and the current state of our world can be overwhelming and paralyzing. The best intentions are only that—intentions. Those intentions need to turn into action. Do the things to step out and get going on your next job search. It sounds simple but project a positive mindset that all things work out for your benefit and that the job for you is out there.
Even applying one of the above tips will set you on the right path to finding a job during COVID-19. One step or five steps taken, progress is progress. During this time, give yourself some compassion and do the best you can to start this process.
